Police have recovered a semi-trailer tanker that was hijacked by a group of five armed robbers on the 21st of October, 2023, at 9 pm.
The trailer, Reg No. UAU 402E a Mercedes Benz, blue in color was ambushed along the Iganga-Jinja highway in Bukoyo Village while transporting 34 tonnes of Kerosene from Kenya to the Prompet Energies Ltd depot in Kampala.
Fred Enanga, the Uganda police spokesperson says the thugs attacked the driver, Abdul Nuru, a Somali national based in Kisumu, Kenya, forcibly removed him from the vehicle, tied his hands and legs, and left him stranded in Kakira sugar plantation. Nuru was later found, given first aid, and provided with necessary support.
Enanga further explained that police response teams from the Kiira region, Busoga East, Jinja city, and Iganga, worked tirelessly to ensure that the semi-trailer was successfully recovered in Jinja City and all 34 tonnes of Kerosene were found intact. He says the trailer’s goods were handed over to the management of Prompet Energies Ltd.
“We commend the outstanding work of our police response teams and urge all truck drivers to report any suspicious activity to the National Operations Command Center at the following telephone numbers: 0800199399 and 0800199699.” he said in a statement
Police are still tracking down the suspects responsible for this criminal act.
