A man in Mpigi has been arrested on allegations of impersonating a National Identification Regulatory Authority (NIRA) staff to defraud the public.
The suspect is Katumba Joseph Kelly, 36, a computer technician in kyasanku zone, Mpigi town council.
Katumba was busted after one of his victims reported the matter to police.
The suspect is accused of conning his victim identified as Nagayi Sumayiya, 33, over 1 million shillings under the pretext of getting her a job at NIRA offices in Mpigi district.
Sumayiya was convinced by Katumba that the Mpigi town council NIRA offices had advertised vacancies and he had the power to influence employment.
Fred Enanga, the Uganda police spokesman says the businesswoman operating in Kawempe paid the fraudster a deposit of 650.000 shillings on October 12,2023, to secure the illicit deal.
He says the suspect forged an appointment and acceptance letter, convincing his naive victim that she had obtained the job. He then demanded for the balance inorder to finalize her employment.
Enanga further explains that when the victim went to the NIRA offices to clear the balance, she realised that Katumba was a fraud who had never worked at NIRA before .
“The victim went to NIRA offices, with a balance of Ugx 350,000=, out of the Ugx 1 million, agreed upon. To her surprise she found that there were no job advert and the suspect, Katumba Joseph, not a NIRA staff at Mpigi.” says Enanga
Sumayiya reported the incident to police and the suspect was traced and arrested at his workshop. The police spokesman reveals that the suspect has since admitted to duping the victim.
