Over 100 Students Hospitalised With Food Poisoning
Several pupils attached to Golden Learning Centre Nursery and Primary School in Mityana have been admitted in hospital for allegedly eating contaminated food.
Over 100 pupils were hospitalized on September 27, 2023, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The incident happened at 4:30 pm at the school in Namungo Central Village, Namungo Parish, Namungo Sub-county, Mityana District.
Racheal Kawala, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson says pupils at the school began experiencing alarming symptoms like stomach ache, headache, and vomiting soon after consuming their lunch, which was served Posho and beans at 2:00pm.
Kawala says the affected pupils were swiftly transported to several health facilities, including Namungo Health Center III and MUKJ Medical Clinic, for immediate medical attention.
She says detectives have already visited the scene of the crime and documented the evidence, while recording statements from the distressed victims.
Kawala further explained that two suspects, identified as Kule Alfred and Mumbere Edger, who both serve as school cooks, were apprehended to assist in the ongoing investigations. Currently, they are in detention at Mityana CPS.
Additionally, crucial food samples from the school premises have been collected and will undergo forensic analysis to determine if any contaminants were present in the lunch that could have led to this dire situation.
Preliminary findings indicate that the school had a total enrollment of 350 pupils, with the majority of students being discharged by evening. However, approximately 50 pupils remain under medical monitoring, though they are reported to be in stable conditions. Remarkably, no fatalities have been reported as of now.
