Muni University has appointed Associate Professor Simon Katrini as its new Vice Chancellor (VC), with his tenure commencing on September 1, 2023.
The university officially announced this significant appointment, expressing their congratulations and anticipation of his continued leadership.
Professor Katrini has been serving as the Acting VC at Muni University since June 2022, a role he assumed following the unfortunate passing of the university’s founding VC, Professor Christine Dranzoa.
The decision to appoint Professor Katrini as the VC was made based on the recommendation of the university council and the approval of Chancellor Bishop Henry Luke Orombi.
Commenting on this appointment, Joel Aita, the Chairman of the Muni University Council, highlighted the notable achievements during Professor Katrini’s one-year tenure as Acting VC. Under his leadership, the university experienced significant growth in student admissions, attracting students from across the country.
There was also a substantial increase in interest from students from the West Nile region, which presents opportunities for local entrepreneurs in the form of hostel and restaurant services, benefiting the community.
Aita further mentioned that the university successfully secured substantial grant approvals during this period, including one exceeding $27 million, which is currently in the final stages of processing.
Professor Katrini’s association with Muni University began when he joined as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of academic affairs in November 2015. Prior to that, he held various positions at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) for 17 years.
Muni University, located in Arua City, is a government-funded institution established in 2013. It is one of Uganda’s public universities and degree-awarding institutions, operating under the supervision of the National Council for Higher Education. Professor Katrini’s appointment is expected to bring continued growth and development to the university as it progresses on its academic journey.
