Police Halt NUP Rallies Amidst Assassination Concerns Against Leader Kyagulanyi
The Uganda Police Force has announced the suspension of all National Union Party (NUP) mobilization activities due to credible intelligence pointing to an imminent security threat against the NUP leader, Ssentatmu Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine .
According to the police spokesperson Fred Enanga, their intelligence sources have indicated that the threat is expected to materialize during Kyagulanyi’s planned mobilization tour in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan area and the surrounding districts.
Addressing journalists at the police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, Enanga says the motive behind this alleged threat is to inflict harm on Kyagulanyi, undermine the government, and incite civil unrest.
Enanga says the challenging security environment in the Kampala Metropolitan areas, presence of heightened terror activities attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) has also contributed to the decision.
He further says that the precarious situation, coupled with the nature of political mobilization characterized by slow-moving convoys, traffic congestion, the use of local untrained guards, and Kyagulanyi’s visibility atop a motor vehicle amidst a large crowd, makes him a potential target for terrorists.
“On the 7.09.2023, the police leadership informed the NUP leader Kyagulanyi. We are therefore, halting with immediate effect all the mobilization activities of the NUP as we monitor the situation. We can meanwhile, guarantee his security during town hall meetings, with a restricted number of participants, who can be checked and secured by the police. We further urge them to work with the District Security Committee in advance for thorough security planning.” he said
Enanga however says the public and NUP supporters will be guaranteed during town hall meetings, where the number of participants will be restricted and subject to police checks and security measures.
The police have also encouraged the NUP to collaborate with the District Security Committee to ensure comprehensive security planning.
Enanga has however warned potential propaganda campaigns from NUP bloggers and propagandists in response to the suspension of processions and rallies. He says that this measure is not intended to curtail political activities but is instead aimed at ensuring Kyagulanyi is safety and security.
