President Museveni Backs BRICS Values of Equality and Independence
President Museveni expressed his support for the principles upheld by BRICS countries, emphasizing justice, equality, and respect for the independence of nations. He indicated Uganda’s backing for BRICS’ efforts and hinted at the country’s interest in joining the group in the future.
Museveni urged global actors to lead by example through exemplary conduct rather than coercion or manipulation.
BRICS, initially comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, was established in 2001 with the addition of South Africa in 2010. Its main objectives include boosting economic cooperation, sustainable development, inclusive growth, political collaboration, and mutual understanding among its members.
Museveni addressed both the challenges posed by nature and oppression from fellow humans. He criticized the exploitation of technological and economic disparities to perpetuate oppression in developing countries. The current threat of financial cuts from the World Bank and Western nations over Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act highlights the delicate balance between partnership and interference in ideologies and ways of life.
Speaking through Vice President Jessica Alupo at the 15th BRICS Summit held at the Sandton Convention Center, Museveni advocated for respecting the choices of different nations in their quest for emancipation from oppression.
The summit, held in Johannesburg, resolved to include Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as full members of BRICS next year. While addressing ongoing conflicts, the summit encouraged international organizations and financial institutions to play a constructive role in building consensus on economic policies.
Additionally, the summit highlighted the growing momentum for local currencies, alternative financial arrangements, and payment systems. Uganda’s participation in the summit signifies its commitment to fostering stronger regional and global ties, aiming to contribute to initiatives promoting inclusive growth, innovation, and the well-being of its citizens.
This engagement aligns with Uganda’s pursuit of collaborative partnerships on a regional and global scale, demonstrating the country’s dedication to the betterment of its people and fostering prosperity.
