Police in Bugweri responded to a distress call in the wee hours of Sunday morning and rescued a newly born baby who was dumped in a pit latrine by an unknown person.

The incident happened in in Idudi B cell, in Idudi town council, in Bugweri district. It is alleged that the baby could have dropped by its mother in the pit latrine belonging to one Iduma Mubitirivu, during delivery.

Mubitirivu says he visited the pit latrine on Sunday morning and heard  a baby crying, when he looked inside with a torch, he realized the baby floating on top and immediately called police for help.

Locals and police teamed up to remove the baby and that has since been taken to Iganga hospital’s neonatal ward for further management.

The baby still had its umbilical cord and visible blood stains, raising suspicion that she might have been dumped in the pit latrine immediately after delivery during Saturday night.

The Busoga East police spokesperson, Diana Nandawula, says that reports received from the hospital indicate that the baby is out of danger and she is positively responding to treatment.

Nandawula further says that police is liaising with a children’s home to ensure proper care of the child as they intensify the search for her biological mother.
