The Old Kampala hospital has given an ultimatum of seven days to the Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to issue a public apology over defamatory statements against them over alleged kidney harvest saga.
This follows a heated incident in which one Mohammed Kabanda through his lawyer Lukwago through threatened to sue the hospital for allegedly removing his left kidney after he visited the facility to seek treatment after sustaining head injuries in a road accident.
Kabanda, a local vendor at Owino market claimed to have only sustained a head injury but was surprised to also find a fresh cut to the left side of his belly upon returning from the theatre.
However, investigations done by the Uganda Medical Practitioners Council revealed that he was born without a left kidney. The Medical Council launched Independent investigations into the matter under the Health Monitoring Unit of State House.
Dr Joel Okullo, the chairman UMDP council explained that based on the surgeons and neurologists, medical reports there was no Kidney on the left-side. He said Kabanda has only one Kidney on the right side.
He also stated that there is a possibility that the left kidney could have been fused with the right one during formation.
“The specialists examined the site of and size of the incision.Their findings were that indeed there was a scar in the anterior abdominal wall that was far from the anatomical location of the kidney. And according to the site and size it would be very difficult for anyone to harvest a kidney through that site.” he said
Speaking to the press at the Old kampala hospital on Monday November 21, the director Faisal Kazibwe said that Lukwago’s statements have negatively affected them to an extent of loosing patients who used to visit the hospital before.
He therefore indicated that Lukwago has received a communication to apologize in the next seven days and that failure to do so they are ready to file a suit against him before courts of law.
