The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has dismissed charges of inciting violence against Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya.

The charges stem from a protest staged by the MP at Mini-Price in Kampala in March 2021 over the continued detention of National Unity Platform supporters post election time.

Ssegirinya was arrested at the Central Police Station and consequently charged with inciting violence.

Ssegirinya on Monday appeared before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu morning via the zoom app, where he was freed of the charges even without legal representation.

The presiding Chief Magistrate Kamasanyu ruled that the State failed to provide credible evidence finding the accused guilty of the said charges. She explained that the state witnesses contradicted on the Ssegirinya’s arrest and statement recording.

Kamasanyu stated that the State also failed to prove how Ssegirinya’s protest incited violence because it only started after police officers arrived at the scene.

Prosecution had presented three witnesses including Erias Kijjampora, the investigating officer, Flavia Musimenta, the Officer in Charge of the MiniPrice police post who arrested Ssegirinya before handing him to Kampala Central Police Station, and CPS Operations Officer David Nahamya who participated in the arrest and recording statements.

Ssegirinya still faces a similar charge before Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha, over a Facebook post he made. He is also imprisoned at Luzira Maximum Prison on charges of murder and attempted murder over killings in the Greater Masaka.
