The Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to four supporters of the National Unity Platform who were arrested in a protest.
The suspects who appeared before the Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate Fidelis Otwao on Wednesday, were charged with common nuisance.
The group were arrested while delivering a petition at Parliament on state of Ugandan domestic workers in the Middle East.
Police picked up the suspects and stated that they had caused traffic and interrupted normal operations.
Among them include Nansana West Ward LCV Councillor John Bosco Sserunkuma, Richard Sebuganda, a Makerere University Student and two businessmen Brian Ssemanda and Moses Sserugo.
However, the presiding Magistrate Otwao granted each of them a cash bail of 100,000 Shillings, while their sureties were each bonded at five million Shillings.
They were directed to ensure that the accused persons return to Court for trial on September 15, 2022.
Speaking outside the court, Shamim Malende their lawyer noted that they applied for bail because its their right but also the accused claimed they were tortured and in need of urgent medical attention.
One of the suspects, Ssebuganda, appeared in court with a broken arm believed to have been injured by a teargas canister.
Prosecution had previously objected to the bail request on grounds that the offence against all accused persons involves inconveniencing the public and once they are granted bail they are likely to repeat it.
