UPDF, FARDC Commence Construction of Security Roads in Congo

UPDF and Congolese Forces commence construction of Security roads.

The UPDF and FARDC joint forces conducting a counter-terrorism operation codenamed “Operation Shujaa” against the IS-affiliated ADF terrorists in Eastern
DRC have today launched the construction of security roads that are meant to facilitate quick movement of troops and logistics in the area of operations.

The roads will also ease movement of civilian traffic especially along the Nobili – Kamango – Semliki – Beni road.

The stretch had almost been rendered impassable due to its
poor state and the insecurity caused by the ADF terrorists.
Operation Shujaa was launched on 30th November 2021 following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Governments of Uganda and DRC. The MoU
which was signed on…… allows both forces to conduct operations to rout ADF out of Eastern DRC.

The first phase of the works, starting from Mukakati trading centre to River Semliki,
was launched by the Commander of Operation Shujaa, who is also the Commander of UPDF Mountain Division, Maj Gen Kayanja Muhanga and the Second in
Commander (2IC) of FARDC’s Operation Sokola, Col Antonio Gbiagolo. The duo thereafter toured the deployments of the joint forces in area.

In his remarks, Col Gbiagolo applauded the agreement of the two Heads of State, authorising the Joint Operation to deal with ADF once and for all and said the
Congolese people have welcomed the initiative. He added that the 30th November 2021 air and artillery strikes by UPDF against four ADF camps; Kambi yayu,
Tondoli, Belu 1 and Belu 2 inflicted heavy casualties on the ADF.

The strike, Col Dbiagolo stated, has led to the surrender of over 60 ADF terrorists to FARDC forces in Beni.

The Congolese commander implored the joint forces to
sustain pressure on the remnants in order to cause more defections.

On his part Gen Kayanja pledged total commitment of the operational forces under his command to ensuring restoration of peace and stability in area.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding, Operation Shujaa will be reviewed every two months in order to determine progress and inform further decisions.
