Masaka Killings: Security Agencies Re-arrest MP Ssewanyana

Makindye West Member of Parliament Allan Ssewanyana was on Thursday, September 24, 2021, re-arrested by security agencies shortly after he was released from Kigo Prison.

Ssewanyana who was released on Monday, September 20, by the High Court, was arrested moments after he had been escorted out of prison by the warders.

His supporters, relatives and lawyers were left in shock when a vehicle nicknamed ‘drone’ commonly used by security agencies suddenly drove towards the gate, and armed men in jackets jumped out and arrested Ssewanyana, bundled him up in the van and sped off.

However, sources in security revealed their arrest was in connection with new evidence following the arrest of eight more suspects by Nsangi Police Station.

The Police noted that the politician was being investigated on claims that he had bankrolled killings in Masaka.

Ssewanyana and MP Muhammad Ssegirinya were summoned to appear at the Masaka Central Police station early this month, and subsequently charged jointly together with other suspects with murder and attempted murder.

They were remanded to Kigo Prison but later the State charged them with terrorism arising from the recent killings of people using machetes in Masaka.

On Monday, however, the High Court in Masaka granted the duo bail.

They, however, failed to get out of prison after the High Court Registrar who was supposed to sign their court documents, failed to turn up in court on Tuesday and his known phones were switched off.

Ssegirinya had already been summoned to appear in Buganda Road Court on other charges.
