8 Suspects Arrested in Kampala Protests
Eight people have been apprehended and detained in connection with alleged incitement to violence in the Kampala Metropolitan area.
The arrests were made following reports of planned demonstrations and concerns over potential unrest.
Among those detained are prominent figures such as Kimani Moreen Nakirya, serving as the Secretary General of the Federation of Uganda Trade Associations (FUTA), and Ssembajwe Fred, who holds a key role in youth affairs focusing on skilling and training initiatives.
Other suspects include Mukisa Emmanuel, responsible for discipline within FUTA, as well as individuals identified as Jean Ndayambale, Ntambi Midu, Kukuriza Wilson, Jabez Emma, and Lwangmiyo Moses Nsubuga.
They are currently held in custody at both Katwe and Central Police Station in Kampala. The charges brought against them include incitement to violence, reflecting the seriousness of the allegations.
In response to the perceived threat of potential unrest, a joint security team comprising the Police,
Military Police, and UPDF has been deployed throughout the Kampala Metropolitan area. Their primary objective is to monitor the situation closely, particularly the planned demonstrations by the business community.
Additionally, the security forces are providing protection to both open and closed businesses, aiming to prevent any opportunistic acts of violence or looting.
While the traders initially called for a peaceful demonstration to address their grievances, there are concerns that the situation may escalate, with reports indicating intentions to ignite tires in the streets.
In light of these developments, authorities are urging dialogue between the business community and relevant stakeholders to seek amicable resolutions to the underlying issues, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region
