Police have cautioned the pubic to be extra vigilant following the detonation of six homemade explosive devices (IEDs) in Kampala city. Security has also been beefed up in various parts of the City to avert any eventualities.
Security forces including the Military and Police have attributed the foiled attacks to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF)attempts in Kampala.
As a result, security forces are at various building entrances to scout for suspicious people or items spotted in the public.
Fred Enanga, police spokesperson says IEDs were found in different places: one in the Mabito area of Nateete and the other inside a guest house in Bunamwaya, both on Monday. Three others retrieved from a rental in Lungujja and one at Miracle Center Rubaga on September 03, 2023.
Enanga explained that the police received information about a possible explosive device in the Mabito area on Monday, so they quickly checked it out. Specially trained K9 dogs and bomb experts examined the suspicious package and confirmed it was dangerous. Another IED was discovered in a guest house in Bunamwaya.
He said that at the Miracle Centre Cathedral a suspect named Kintu Abdul had carried an explosive disguised as a food container. Luckily, the authorities safely removed the device without harming anyone.
The arrested suspect, Kintu revealed that six terrorists were involved in the plot.
He further explained that this information led the police to a rented house in Luungujja zone 8, where they found and safely dealt with three more explosive devices.
Enanga added that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has commended the teamwork of various law enforcement agencies, including the Joint Anti-terrorism Task Force (JATT), CMI, CI, ISO, and the police in neutralizing this dangerous threat.
He has called on the public to be watchful in their daily lives, especially in public places, and to report anything unusual or suspicious.
Enanga says five more suspects have been arrested in connection with the explosive device found in the Mabiito area of Nateete. This brings the total number of explosive devices discovered and dealt with between September 3rd and 4th, 2023, to six. These suspects are connected to a group called ADF, which is considered extremist.
