23 suspects Arrested For Theft of Phones In Kawempe

Police has conducted  a two-day operation targeting phone snatchers in Kawempe Division, Kampala City, and have arrested 23 suspects.

The operation was conducted based on information from Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage and guidance from victims in the areas of Kyebando Cell, Kilokole, and Keti Falawo.

The suspects, mostly aged 17 and 18, are believed to be responsible for a series of phone thefts that occurred during the evening rush hours, particularly between 5 pm and 8 pm. Some of these incidents even took place in front of CCTV cameras.

The arrested individuals include Sabaga Suli Allan, Matovu Joram, Kiyobe Siraji, Mwesigwa Jackson, Mugabo Akim, Mudidi Israel, Namakula Caro, Kavuma Robert, Katende William, Kintu Josephat, Tuwi Bashiru, Katumba Fred, Kiwanuka John Bosco, Ndaula Melvin, Ndugwa Faruk, Haruna Kigundu, Senono Haruna, Muzamilu Ali, Ndenza Jamilu, Kwagala Joel, Segawa Sulaiman, Umaru Kalenzi, Baka Moses, Kiiza Joseph, Matovu Akim, Luuze Abdul Shafiq, Suuna Shafiq, Setamu Abdul Salan, and Bawa Isa.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, some of the suspects were found in possession of narcotic drugs. During interrogations, it was revealed that the suspects targeted individuals with mobile phones during traffic jams, particularly around Kyebando traffic lights. Many of the apprehended individuals were also found to be suspected drug users, and a significant number had recently been released from prison.

The suspects are facing charges related to possession of suspected narcotic substances and theft. The local community members who assisted the police in apprehending the suspects have been commended for their role in promoting community policing.

Luke Owoyesigyire emphasized the police’s commitment to combating crime and maintaining law and order in Kawempe Division, while appreciating the efforts of the Kawempe team in ensuring community safety and security.
