Kiruhura Deputy LC 5 Vice Chair Resigns Amidst Rape Allegations

The Kiruhura Deputy District LC Vice Chairperson has submitted his resignation amidst allegations of rape, according to a statement from Dan Mukago Rutetebya, the Kiruhura District LC V Chairperson.

Adson Atuhaire’s decision to step aside is intended to facilitate the ongoing investigations and maintain the district’s image.

Mukago says Atuhaire resigned on September 20, 2023 requesting to remain out of office until the rape allegations against him are resolved.

This move follows Atuhaire’s recent arrest on charges of allegedly raping a student from Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara.

The allegations stem from an incident on September 8, 2023, in Rwentondo, Kakoba ward, Mbarara City. Atuhaire and the victim had exchanged contact information earlier that day when she provided directions to the Golden Leaf Bar. Later that evening, Atuhaire, allegedly called the victim, who agreed to join them for an evening out.

According to Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police Force spokesperson, Atuhaire picked up the victim from her hostel at Kakoba Kyapatoni cell and purchased groceries and snacks.

However, during the return journey, it is alleged that he sexually assaulted her. The victim promptly reported the incident to the police, resulting in Atuhaire’s arrest.

Atuhaire has since been granted bail, subject to strict instructions not to interfere with the ongoing investigations.

The resignation of Atuhaire, a key figure in Kiruhura District, comes as the community watches closely to see how the legal proceedings unfold and whether the allegations will lead to charges and a trial.
