15 Passengers Die as Trailer Rams into Taxi on Kagadi-Kyenjojo Road

Police are investigating circumstances under which 15 people including a driver perished in a horrible accident along the Kagadi -Kyenjojo road on Sunday evening.

The fatal incident happened when a trailer registration number UAD 431Q, collided with a taxi registration number UBM 426V, carrying 9 passengers at Kyamutunzi village a few meters from Muzizi river in Muhorro town Council, Kagadi District.

Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred at about 9pm last night after the trailer lost control hence ramming into the taxi.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, says preliminary findings indicate that the the trailer that was travelling towards Fortportal for the Democratic Republic of Congo suffered a mechanical condition and failed to brake while negotiating a sharp corner. He says the trailer collided with the taxi that was headed towards Kagadi district killing 15 people on the spot and leaving 3 others terribly injured.

Hakiza explains that police are yet to ascertain the identities of the deceased whose bodies were transferred the Kagadi General Hospital for postmortem. They currently lie at the hospital’s mortuary.

The identities of the deceased, as well as the survivors, are yet to be determined.

Last week during plenary, the Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon Anita Among warned on laxity in implementing road safety laws in place, saying this is partly attributes to the rampant accidents.

The Government is now planning to introduce an automated driver testing system in the forthcoming Financial Year 2024/2025 to not only enable motorists acquire driving permits easily but also identify fake and reckless drivers to minimize road accidents.
