The Kira Regional Police Spokesperson James Mubi, has confirmed the arrest of two suspects disguised as power regulator Umeme to steal yaka meters from homes.
The suspects have been identified as Erick Kiyaga and Derrick Obuddi both 25 years old.
Police also confiscated fake UMEME Identity cards, Solido wires, communication cables, meter boxes and a motorcycle with registration UFN 506E being used by the suspects.
The suspects are currently detained at Buwenge central police station after locals told police upon realizing they are quacks. It is alleged that the suspects approached locals in Bwase zone and informed them that they had been directed to replace their old yaka meters with new ones.
The duo presented presented locals with fake work ID’s after they were tasked to inform the local leaders.
In the process, one of locals took pictures of the suspect’s IDs and shared them with UMEME officials, who disowned the suspects and their alleged assignment, leading to arrest.
Mubi, says that the available intelligence information indicates that the suspects are part of the bigger racket of UMEME impostors behind the illegal power connections and vandalism.
He adds that the suspects face two counts of obtaining money through false pretense and robbery of electricity equipment.
