11-Year-Old Pupil Linked to Muheju P/S Dormitory Fire Incident
Following a suspected arson incident at Little Muheji Nursery and Primary School in Nansana, on April 16, 2024, investigations have linked an 11- year- old pupil at the school to the incident.
The fire, which occurred in the boys’ dormitory called Tassels, ravaged through properties of learners but left no fatalities or injuries. It was swiftly managed from spreading further by the school police personnel.
The arson attempt caused damage to property within the dormitory, including mattresses, pillowcases, bed sheets, and scholastic materials.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson preliminary findings have linked a minor identified as Mubere Ethan, aged 11, to the incident.
Mubere was observed by two other pupils in the dormitory with a matchbox. He admitted to bringing the matchbox to school in an attempt to open his suitcase after misplacing the keys. He alleges that one of the matches may have accidentally ignited the fire, spreading to the dormitory.
“Mubere has corroborated with both the detectives and the school management, stating that he brought the matchbox to school in an attempt to open his suitcase after misplacing the keys. He alleges that one of the matches may have accidentally ignited the fire,” said Owoyesigyire
On Wednesday, preliminary findings suggested that prior to the outbreak, an unidentified suspect tampered with the electric wire supplying power to the dormitory and the camera control room.
Owoyesigyire, commended Didas Nuwamanya for his keen observation and timely alert to the police guards, which played a major role in thwarting the intentions of the perpetrator(s).He mentioned that despite attempts to ignite the fire using matches, the arsonist’s efforts were largely unsuccessful, sparing the school from extensive damage.
